Due to a scheduling change, the field trip to the OC History Center has been changed from Friday, May 8 to tomorrow, Thursday, May 7. Sorry for any inconvenience this may cause. Because the original permission slip form indicated that we would be walking there on Friday, I need to have a confirmation from all parents indicating that they are aware that the date has been changed to Thursday. If you could send me a quick notice indicating that you are aware of the date change and it is still OK for your child to attend, I would greatly appreciate it. You can do this by e-mail (denise.obrien@saintmaryacademy.com) or just jot a quick note down and send it with your child tomorrow. Also, please remember to have your child bring a sack lunch with them to school tomorrow as well.
Thanks for your understanding!
Mrs. O'Brien :)

Week of April 13
Just a few things going on this week.
First, a reminder that students should be working on their science showcase project outside of school. It is due into school on May 13 for class presentations. The science showcase itself will be Friday, May 15. Invitations will be going home to parents/families inviting them to the science showcase. Please encourage your child to put a lot of effort into this project. While this is a great learning experience for them, students understand it also counts as a test grade. They understand that I will be looking for their best effort and strong knowledge on their topic. It should not be something put together a few days before it is due. As I told students in class, I am available to answer questions and provide guidance to them as needed. We've talked in class about what their displays should look like, what their presentations should consist of, so students are fully aware of what I expect of them. Feel free to e-mail me if you have any additional questions or concerns. As I reminded students, don't wait until the last minute - students should be actively working on these projects between now and May 13.
Science test - we do have a science test scheduled for tomorrow. Students have known about it since last week and the practice test is available online. There were only 2 lessons in this chapter so the test will be relatively short.
There is also a math test on Friday. We will be review for that this week in class. This chapter has been relatively easy for students so I don't think the test will be too difficult for them.
I will not be at school on Wednesday & Thursday of this week. I will be attending an educational technology conference those two days.
I wanted to let you know about the last two field trips we have scheduled for this year. The first will be to the Oldham County History Center on May 8. This is a fun walking field trip that I take students on every year. While it is not necessary, any parents who would like to come are welcome. The other field trip is the annual 4th grade Belle of Louisville trip. It is scheduled for Thursday, May 14. I will need at least one parent who is willing to drive to attend this field trip. To add the cost of a bus will make this too expensive so instead we will be driving to the river. Of course, any other parents who would like to come are welcome. I will need to know in advance to ensure that we have enough tickets purchase so when I send home the sign-up form, make sure you get it back to me as soon as possible. The permission slip forms for these two trips will be going home in the next couple of weeks.
Finally, we're coming down to the these last few weeks of school. I can't believe the school year is already coming to an end. It's been such a great year for me. I'm putting together a memory of their 4th grade year so if anyone has any pictures of students from this school year that you would like me to include, if you could please send those into me via e-mail, flash drive or CD sometime this month that would be great. I only need the picture files, so I can return the CD or flash drive after I've downloaded the pictures.
Thanks!!

Spring break at last!
We've finally made it to spring break. We've got a few things going on this week before we enjoy a nice long week off.
First, we have a science test scheduled for this Thursday over chapter 11. The practice test is posted online. Click here to go to the practice test.
Second, information will be going home this week with students about the upcoming Science Showcase. Make sure you read over the parent letter carefully and let me know if you have any questions.
The week we come back from Spring break we've got three big events happening.
First, the Living Stations play is on Tuesday evening in the Church and again on Friday during the school day.
Second, the field trip to Farnsley Moreman is Tuesday, April 7. We'll be leaving at 8:15 that morning and returning around 2:45. You'll need to make arrangements to pick up your child a little later that day. Students are to bring a sack lunch or order a sack lunch from the cafeteria that day. Please, no soft drinks.
Third, students will be going with Mrs. Bogo on Holy Thursday to the LaGrange Christian Church to sing for the Lenten Service. They will be leaving school around 11:30 and returning around 1:00. Students will be eating lunch at Dairy Queen so they will need to bring money for food with them.
Have a great week and have a safe and relaxing spring break!

Great work!
The 4th grade has been working very hard on a couple in class projects the last 2 weeks. One was a presentation using Google Slides (similar to PowerPoint). Students worked in partners to prepare a presentation about a science topic that we've been studying in class. Today, they presented their slideshows in class. I was very proud of their work. Ask your child, to show you their completed project. I think you'll be very impressed.
The other big project we've been working on is a Podcast on the Civil War. Again, they have worked very hard and I couldn't be happier with the end result. I've posted their podcast to the Social Studies page of the classroom website. The link is http://www.mrsobrien.net/projects.html. Take a listen and enjoy! I am also posting a link to the podcast on the blog as well.
We've got 2 weeks until spring break and I don't know about you, but I'm ready! We do have a math test this week. Right now it's scheduled for Thursday, but depending on how ready I feel the students are, we might move it back until Friday. I'll make that decision probably tomorrow.
Don't forget to send in the permission slip forms for the Farnsley Moreman field trip and the Living Stations play. We need those back as soon as possible.
Finally, the Penny War fundraising drive is next week. Again, we are sponsoring the Leukemia and Lymphona Society in honor of our own survivor, Kaithlin Fisher as well as anyone else we know and love who has faced those diseases. Please be as generous as you can in this effort.
Thanks and have a great week!

Week of Feb. 16, 2009
What's going on this week.....
Tuesday- I will be in the building but I will not be in the classroom. I am teaching the SEEK class to visiting students on that day in the computer lab. Students will have a substitute in the room on that day.
Wednesday - This is our make-up day for the PE field trip to the bowling alley. I know that this is the scheduled day for the make-up open house. I apologize for parents not being able to visit us that day but the field trip was rescheduled before Mrs. Zettel rescheduled the open house. For any parents that still want to come and visit the classroom, please feel free to stop by any time that is convenient for you. Just send me a quick e-mail or note letting me know when you'd like to come that way I can make sure I plan for the time accordingly.
Friday - I've got a science test scheduled for this day. I'll be posting the link for the online practice test on Monday so students can begin studying. We'll be preparing a study guide on Wednesday & reviewing in class throughout the week.
I think that's all for now! Have a great week!

Field Trip
Parents, as you may or may not know yet, we had to cancel our field trip to the bowling alley today due to bad weather conditions this morning. We just weren't comfortable driving on the roads with students in the cars while it was snowing. We have rescheduled the field trip for Wed. Feb. 18. So we'll try again on that day!
Also, Mrs. Zettel will be posting the information in the newsletter but the snow days will be made up on the following days:
Monday, Feb. 16th
Monday, April 13th,
Tuesday, May 26th
Wednesday, Mary 27th (last day of school - 11:30 dismissal)
Thanks!

Change in Plans
Well, we're finally back after a crazy week of weather. I hope everyone was able to stay warm & I don't know about you, but I'm very grateful for the simple things in life - like heat!
As for school, just a reminder that tomorrow is our field trip to the bowling alley for PE class. We will be leaving here at 8:45. Mrs. Wright & myself will be driving and we'll be meeting up with the JC campus at the bowling alley. It should be a lot of fun! We'll have lunch upon our return, which will be around 12:15.
Since Catholic schools week was interrupted, Mrs. Zettel did announce that we would still have an Open House at school following Mass on Wednesday. So you are still welcome to come into the classroom from 9:15 - 11:00 to watch us in action. We'd love to see you here.
We're hoping to reschedule a few of the Catholic Schools Week activities for Friday but I'll get back to everyone with the details of that as soon as I know something.
As for the tests that were originally scheduled for last week. We're still going to have the science test on Wednesday but I'm going to allow it to be an open book test. Students will have to label their answers with the correct page numbers of where they found their answers. Hopefully, this takes a little pressure off from studying as hard at home.
The math test is still scheduled for Friday so we'll be reviewing this week to refresh their memories.
I think that's it! Let's hope for a little less exciting week than the last one!
